Really, is there any other way to learn that to get out there and try? To skin some knees, bruise some elbows and yes, even look foolish for a while, while we figure things out? So go! Learn to do it by doing it.Give yourself permission to learn and explore and fiddle with things. And from one try-er to another, remember to have some fun along the way!
Thank you, Vincent, for helping me feel not so alone :)

{ “God Uses Everything.” :: Art Print, available on Etsy in February 2013 }
For the longest time, I gave so much energy and emotion over to what I call the “wasted years”, years I spent wandering around in despair, going after degrees and new careers, not knowing about this rich creative life that I had inside of me all along.
In time I came to realize and accept that the parts of my life I felt were useless tatters, non-successes, attempts that ended in failure, ungraceful falls—the shameful stuff—were precious to God, and not only that, but utterly redeemable.
Isn’t it after all the old, worn, holey pieces of ratty paper I treasure more than something shiny and new? Isn’t it the falling apart books with the binding coming undone that I clutch to my chest and can’t wait to salvage and set into an already envisioned new collage? And isn’t He himself the Great Creator?
He did not and does not look upon me with disdain or disappointment...no! And because our sins are made whiter than snow by Jesus himself, He doesn’t see you that way either.
He sees a dearly loved child—YOU (and me)—someone He longs to hold in bear hug, all while whispering in your ear, “Don’t you worry. Nothing is ever wasted. I cherish everything you have gone through. There is purpose and meaning and redemption in all of it, so don’t you fret.”
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” ~John 6:12-14 (NIV)Posted at 12:00 AM in 30 Days of Handlettering Project, Finding my Creative Voice, Mixed-Media Art + Illustration, Motherhood + Life + Faith, Shop Talk | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack (0)

“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.” ~1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)

{ “Your Light Matters” :: Art Print, available on Etsy in February 2013, © Jan Avellana, janavellana.com}
It’s not about how brightly you glow, what you have to bring, how much or how little you feel you have to offer the world. The thing is, when you share yourself with the world, you are giving us a part of yourself. No one else can do that. No one.
Your light really does matter. YOU matter. You are loved.
14 “Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light,
bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be
kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a
hill. 15 If I make you light-bearers, you don't
think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting
you on a light stand. 16 Now that I've put
you there on a hilltop, on a light stand - shine! Keep open
house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others,
you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father
in heaven.” ~Matthew 5: 14-16 (The Message)

{ “Amen.” :: Art Print, available on Etsy in February 2013 }
What an act of faith it was for Mary to be able to say “amen” to God even with all of the unknowns that stretched out before her. The one thing she did know was that God loved her, and this was enough.
“…we are all called to be Mary-pregnant with Jesus. If our bodies are His temple and we have the Holy Spirit in us, than aren't we in the same shape she was in and is our response also to be "be it unto me according to thy word?" and is His word to each of us "I've impregnated you and given you something unique to carry for me. I've deliberately and carefully chosen you to carry this seed and see that it is birthed"? ~ Crystal Neubauer, Crystal Neubauer Art and Objects
Help it to be enough for me today, dear Lord, and for all my days ahead may I say to you in hearty trust, “Amen.”
